To capture the essence of a wild animal is to capture the spirit of nature. Animals in the wild connect with the earth and with one another in ways mysterious to humans. A coyote is never lost. A moose knows precisely where it is going. A mother bear recognizes her cubs without fail. The essence of an animal is found in its eyes. Because I enjoy fishing, hiking, and camping, I often take pictures of animals in their habitats, using those as springboards to paintings. Backgrounds for my wild animals are part real, part surreal, and often imaginary.
